The coolest thing today on vacation – 12/2/08

December 2, 2008

As most of you know this is strictly a book blog. Well it’s my blog so I’m making an exception to the rule. We saw the coolest thing today. We snorkeled some and saw some interesting sea life but the best thing of all was the baby sea turtles. We’re here at the end of nesting season so didn’t think we’d get in on the action but we were surprised by what we saw on the beach.

The group that cares for the turtle nests came by this afternoon and emptied a nest full of eggs. The worker dug up approximately 125 eggs. As she pulled them out of the sand nest they were hatching. By the time she was done she had a box full of teeny, tiny baby sea turtles.

Then this evening just as it was getting dark we got to experience these little guys being released. The workers came back to the beach with the baby turtles and turned them loose. They emptied the box about 15 feet from the water and we got to watch these little ones make their way into the ocean. Only about 1 in a 1,000 will survive to adulthood. These little ones don’t have great odds in their favor but it was truly an experience not to be missed.
